South Atlanta Historic Resources Survey

Southern Research was recently hired by developing firm Pennrose Properties, LLC to survey fifty historicResources that are 50 years old or older. buildings in the South Atlanta Residential historic district as part of mitigation for adjacent new construction which had a significant impact on the historic character of the district. South Atlanta is located approximately 1.6 miles south of I-20 and downtown Atlanta on the east side of I-85. South Atlanta is a historically Black neighborhood which was established in the late 1800s as a residential area for middle to upper class Black citizens, most of whom were associated with Clark College (now Atlanta Clark University) and Gammon Theological Seminary. Our survey consisted of photographing fifty structures on the south end of the district, entering those resources into GNAHRGIS, and writing a survey report highlighting the prominent house types and styles. We also drafted a historical narrative of the neighborhood as there has been very little written on the area.

Swift Mills Redevelopment

In 2018, Southern Research was contracted by Flournoy and Calhoun Realtors to survey a 92-acre tract in northern Columbus, Georgia in Muscogee County. This parcel was found to have historically been farmland until the 1950s, when it became home to Swift Denim Mill. The mill closed in the early 2000s and the buildings were removed, leaving a lot that was partially wooded and partially covered in asphalt. Today, new development can be seen springing up at this location.

Walker-Mitchell-McDougald Cemetery

On behalf of Hughston Homes, Southern Research. investigated the 19th century Walker-Mitchell-McDougald Cemetery in Harris County, Georgia prior to development of a proposed subdivision While the known area of the cemetery will be avoided during construction, Southern Research conducted mechanical stripping to search for unmarked interments in the right of way of a proposed road adjacent to the cemetery. In addition, features within the cemetery were mapped and the site was recorded with the state as an archaeological site. Based on the neglected and vandalized condition of the cemetery, Southern Research also recommends that it be rehabilitated.
